Do you know about the most dangerous business cycle or trap that most business owners are stuck in, and have NO idea how to escape? Studies show it is one of the HARDEST cycles for small businesses to break.
It’s called the sine wave of business.
So you start marketing your business, not knowing what to expect. And a few leads come in. And a couple of referrals. And some repeat business from your current customers. And a couple more new leads from your marketing. And it keeps building.
And all of a sudden, you’re SLAMMED.
You have no time, you’ve gone from ahead of the curve to behind, and your entire day is spent trying to get stuff done and fighting overwhelm or sheer panic. And what’s the first thought that enters your mind?
I can’t handle this. We have to stop marketing!
So you stop. And you finish the projects you have. You feel great because now everything is back in control, you’re on top of it.
And then the lull hits. You have NOTHING coming in.
You frantically call a couple of leads that weren’t ready to decide earlier.
You call a couple of repeat customers.
Now a different level of panic sets in, and you say to employees, “We HAVE to start Marketing and get new business in NOW!”
And then you get a couple more leads in.
And the cycle repeats.
The Sine Wave of Business
Blue Line = Business Revenue
Basically, you start marketing your business, revenue increases and you get slammed with new business. So you stop marketing. You finish your current projects and hit a lull. Your revenue drops. So you start marketing again.
Why is This Cycle So Dangerous?
Whether you’re a small business looking to grow or simply make your business revenue more consistent, this cycle is dangerous for a couple of reasons:
- It creates additional stress and burnout in your employees
- Your entire mindset and day is spent getting through the fires/work in front of you
- You can’t plan- vacation, investments, expenses, etc.
And MOST importantly…
You are training yourself and EVERYONE else around you to React instead of Act. This habit will perpetuate this cycle and keep you stuck for the rest of eternity (of your life or the business).
Because to react, you need an outside stimulus. To act requires none. And when you keep taking action without the outside stimulus, you will create the systems and marketing that will put YOU in control of your business, not the other way around.
